Gasoline Engine Revving
The information contained in our websites is designed as a guide only, for assisting Repair Professionals. By using our information you are agreeing to our T&Cs.
If your engine is revving incorrectly, please look at the following:
1) Check the Spring on the Governor Rod. This is the Rod that goes from the top of your Carburetor to the Governor Arm. Check if the Spring is broken, has become slack or has come off at either end. Replace if necessary.
2) Check the Governor Arm Spring. This sits between the engine and the Governor Arm. Replace if damaged or perished.
3) If steps 1 & 2 do not solve the problem then your Governor will need to be reset. This is a complicated job and we suggest it is only carried out by a mechanically minded person (you will also need a 2nd person to help complete this job).
A) Person 2 – Pull the Governor Arm anti-clockwise until it stops.
B) Person 1 holds the Governor Spindle, that protrudes from the engine, with a pair of pliers while person 2 loosens the Retaining Bolt on the Governor Arm and lifts the Governor Arm straight upwards until it comes off. Do not turn the Governor Spindle while doing this.
C) Person 1 rotates the Governor Spindle as far clockwise as the Spindle will turn.
D) Person 2 replaces the Governor Arm again as far anti-clockwise as possible (Throttle completely open) and tightens the Retaining Nut.
4) If all else fails you need to replace the Governor.
